B.E.C.O.N. Instructors met with several department leaders on Monday, June 26th, 2017 at the New Life Community Church to familiarize upper management with recent Active Shooter Events (ASE’s) and methods on how to better deal with such crisis situations.  B.E.C.O.N.’s goal was to discuss and demonstrate proactive preparation, response and post event procedures that could ultimately increase chances of survival and save lives within the workplace.  Workplace representatives included School Nursery Teachers, Emergency Planning Committee, Higher Education (Blue Ridge Community College), Human Resources, Security, Law Enforcement, Judicial Officials and Dept. of Homeland Security.  Each participant took part in various hands-on exercises and demonstrations to help them understand their own personal capabilities and potentially identify vulnerabilities within their current policy and procedures.

“We developed B.E.C.O.N. to supplement/compliment existing policy and procedures within the workplace, provoke thought and provide workplaces with hands-on reality based training in efforts to replace the stigma of computer based – push button – training.”, Nathan Harmon, B.E.C.O.N. Instructor.  As B.E.C.O.N. Instructor Nathan Harmon puts it…. “There is no retention in training when we are telling our employees to take a 45 minute computer based, stop-and-go as you please (given a week) type of course in an area where our lives could depend on such training.”  “We did not learn how to drive a car by the push of a button and we sure did not learn how to swim at the push of a button or by watching some video.  When our lives depend on it, we have to be able to put our hands on it to retain it through “Reality Based Training (RBT).”  For the Martinsburg WV Journal news article, visit: http://www.journal-news.net/news/local-news/2017/06/panhandle-prepares-for-unthinkable/
